The caduceus, a symbol of two snakes entwined around a staff, is the symbol of the Greek god Hermes. Hermes was the messenger of the gods, protector of travelers, shepherds, and merchants, and also associated with eloquence, negotiation, and alchemy. In ancient Greece, the caduceus was carried by messengers and heralds, serving as a symbol of peace and diplomacy, as well as a mark of commerce.
In this piece, the staff is surrounded by cannabis leaves. The snakes are created with heavy burnwork, as is the outer edges of the leaves.
