WHAT WE MEAN

Suggestion for custom work: It is a good way to add detail without making something too busy or interfering with the integrity. It is not significantly noticeable from a distance but is the primary source to pull designs together.

Burnwork

This is where the laser burns depth into the material (and where the lovely smell comes from on wood pieces).

Cutwork/Cut-Out

The section is completely cut out and inner edges burned.

Suggestion for custom work: Having areas cut out gives more character and catches the eye, but keep things in mind if you plan to hang or prop your piece up against a busy background. Sometimes busy backgrounds make the cut-out areas seem to disappear, or can give a competing effect between the cutout and the background. (Sometimes that works; sometimes it doesn’t.) The more cut-outs you have, the larger the piece needs to be. Too many cut-out areas on a small piece will significantly impact the integrity and strength, resulting in sections that could crack, snap, or break away.

Layering, Stacking

This gives a 3D effect. Layered works have pieces cut from the same material and then attached to the main piece, creating layers and depth.

Suggestion for custom work: This is a fun way to add personality and depth to a piece! There is a level of complexity to it which requires different design work to determine the best way to make things work, but that complexity is also what sets layered pieces apart from flat designs. Layered work typically requires additional design and production time, but often it’s just an extra 1-2 days.
