WAYS TO STYLE
Material Options
Most engravings can be created on an array of materials, to include:
· Lightweight wood
· Ceramic and porcelain tile
· Leather patch
· Slate
· Cork
· Paper, card stock
· Glass
· Mirror
· Acrylic
· Coated and stainless metal
Please contact us if there is a predesigned image you would like on material other than what is noted on the product page.
Wood: Raw or Painted?
Unless specified in the product description, our wood pieces are unfinished and raw, but there are many options available if you want to add a splash of color!
Please contact us for details on having your desired piece painted to match your vision. We typically work with alcohol inks because they allow the wood grain and texture to still show through, but can also finish with a simple wood stain, clear coat, or acrylic paints.
Or you can do it yourself with a little patience! The wood is very receptive to many forms of color, to include alcohol inks, water-based and permanent markers (think: school markers and Sharpie pens), wood stain, acrylic paint, and liquid dyes. If you’re interested in giving it a try, we have some tips and tricks that may be helpful or you can contact us directly. We’re happy to respond to inquiries and answer any questions we can.
Options for Display

WHAT WE MEAN
Linework

This is simply a basic line, like what you would draw with a pencil or pen. There is nothing fancy about it but it’s critical to pull the design together. The nice things with linework is that there’s rarely an instance of “too much”; the downside to linework is that it is very flat and can feel plain, so you don’t want to rely on it entirely.
Suggestion for custom work: It is a good way to add detail without making something too busy or interfering with the integrity. It is not significantly noticeable from a distance but is the primary source to pull designs together.
Burnwork
This is where the laser burns depth into the material (and where the lovely smell comes from on wood pieces).
Suggestion for custom work: Adding burnwork gives significantly more impact and is noticeable from a distance. People will see the burnwork long before they’re close enough to see linework, making the piece really eye catching. The more burnwork you have, however, the larger the piece needs to be to maintain integrity. Too much burnwork on a small piece can make everything visually muddy and difficult to decipher, and intricate burnwork will simply burn away on areas that are too small. Not to worry, we will guide you on this!

Cutwork/Cut-Out
The section is completely cut out and inner edges burned.
Suggestion for custom work: Having areas cut out gives more character and catches the eye, but keep things in mind if you plan to hang or prop your piece up against a busy background. Sometimes busy backgrounds make the cut-out areas seem to disappear, or can give a competing effect between the cutout and the background. (Sometimes that works; sometimes it doesn’t.) The more cut-outs you have, the larger the piece needs to be. Too many cut-out areas on a small piece will significantly impact the integrity and strength, resulting in sections that could crack, snap, or break away.

Layering, Stacking
This gives a 3D effect. Layered works have pieces cut from the same material and then attached to the main piece, creating layers and depth.

Suggestion for custom work: This is a fun way to add personality and depth to a piece! There is a level of complexity to it which requires different design work to determine the best way to make things work, but that complexity is also what sets layered pieces apart from flat designs. Layered work typically requires additional design and production time, but often it’s just an extra 1-2 days.
